Medela Solo Single Electric Pump
The Medela Solo Single Electric Pump, the next generation and enhanced version of the Swing™ breast pump family from Medela, was developed thinking of breastfeeding mothers, who seek comfort and practicality in their lives, without compromising or losing effectiveness.
The Medela Solo Single Electric Pump uses the 2-Phase Expression® technology, which alternates from fast to slower sucking rhythms, mimicking the baby’s natural rhythm. It comes with PersonalFit Flex™ breast shield that can be easily adjusted to fit your breast, making your pumping more comfortable and giving you up to 11.8% more milk.
This clever little guy is more compact than the Swing™ breast pump and has a built-in rechargeable battery with USB type C connector, saving you time and allowing you to use it without having to recharge for up to six pumping sessions.
The Medela Solo Single Electric Pump is a single electric breast pump with closed system, that prevents breast milk from entering the tubing, overflowing and leaking into the pump mechanism. This helps ensure that your expressed milk stays safe and clean, but also that your pump's components are protected from potential damage.
Choosing the right size breast shield/flange
Using the wrong sized flange results in a painful and uncomfortable pumping experience and can make your very expensive pump produce as much milk as if you were using an $80 no-brand pump.
Breast shield sizing is more of an art than a science and depends on the diameter of your nipples (both before and after pumping) and the elasticity of your areola. The easiest and most effective way to get the right size flange is to have a Lactation Consultant watch while you pump, trying various sizes (I love Alona and she does home visits!).
The first step is to measure the diameter of your nipples when they're relaxed (not when they're contracted and hard), then buy N+2-to-3mm and N+4-to-5mm shields. Typically, your nipples won't both be the same size.
For example, if your left nipple measures 20mm in diameter, try the 22mm or 23mm shield and the 24mm or 25mm shield (for each pump brand, not all sizes will be available - eg. we don't have 25mm shields for Medela, but we do have 25mm shields for Spectra). If your right nipple measures 23mm in diameter, try a 25/26mm shield and a 27/28mm shield. If there's overlap in the shields you need to try for each breast, such as in this example, that's great. The mother in this example would only need to buy three shields: 22mm (to try for left breast), 25mm (to try for both breasts), 28mm (to try for right breast).
Once you've worked out which size fits your breast best, you can buy extras as needed.
If this does your head in, contact us, tell us your nipple diameters and pump brand and we'll help you cart the correct shields.

How do you clean Medela Solo Single Electric Pump?
To clean Medela Solo Single Electric Pump follow the same procedures as for the Swing Flex breast pump. Solo™ is quick and easy to disassemble and clean. You can wash the components (except for the tubing) manually or use the dishwasher.
For further information and instructions on how to clean and sanitise the tubing, please read the Medela Solo Single Electric Pump instruction manual.
How do you sterilise the Medela Solo Single Electric Pump?
Sterilising and sanitising are two different things that sound similar. Sterilisation is a procedure that can only be performed in a special lab, normally this happens for hospital products. Sanitising can be done at home. It is easy to sanitise your Medela Solo™, follow the same simple steps as for Swing Flex™ breast pump: cover the disassembled, washed parts, except for the tubing, with water and boil at least for 5 minutes or use the microwaveable Medela Quick Clean™ bags . For further information and instructions on how to clean and sanitise the tubing, please read the Medela Solo Single Electric Pump instruction manual.
How do you use the Medela Solo Single Electric Pump?
Solo™, the next generation of Medela Swing Flex™ electric breast pump, was designed to be easy to use thanks to intuitive controls. This user-friendly pump has only four buttons, and simple icons show the main functions. It comes with nine pre-programmed settings to make it easy for you to choose your Maximum Comfort Vacuum™ level. Learn more about how to use the breast pump and its functions in the Medela Solo Single Electric Pump instruction manual.
Why is my Medela Solo Single Electric Pump losing suction?
The reasons a breast pump may lose suction vary. There are a few steps that you should take to verify your Solo™ breast pump. Please read more about this in the section Troubleshooting in the Medela Solo Single Electric Pump instruction manual.
Can I turn my single breast pump into a double?
Solo™ is a single electric breast pump. This means that its motor is not suitable for generating sufficient vacuum to extract milk from both breasts at the same time. If you express milk regularly and are interested in a double electric breast pump you should consider the Medela Swing Maxi Double Electric Pump. Double pumping not only saves you time by making pumping twice as fast, but also gives you up to 18% more milk.
