A healthy newborn sleeps between 14 and 17 hours every day. That’s a lot of time in the land of nod. And to make your life easier, you want to set up the perfect conditions for bubs to do most of that sleeping in their own bed. Not in the car seat, not in the stroller or the carrier, not on the sofa or in your arms, but in their cot, comfy, cosy and safe. Sleeping in a cot, bassinet or Moses basket is a new skill for your little one, something they will have to learn to do, and clean comfy nursery bedding is one piece of the puzzle of making this happen.

With babies, it can (who are we kidding - will) get messy. Poop, puke, diaper explosions; you get the idea. We always suggest getting mattress protectors to keep your baby cot clean and dry for a comfy sleep environment for your baby. Scroll down to browse our carefully curated selection of high-quality, soft, and snuggly fitted sheets and mattress protectors for your crib, cot, bassinet or Moses basket, as well as sleeping bags and muslin wraps to keep bub snug all night long (ideally!).

Newborn Sleep 101

There’s much to learn about newborn sleep for babies and parents alike! After nine months of being rocked to sleep in the perfect dark, warm cocoon, no wonder there’s an adjustment period to sleep outside the womb.

To reduce the risk of SUDI (sudden unexpected death in infancy), babies should sleep on their backs on a firm, flat baby mattress with fitted blankets or a sleeping bag. They should sleep in cots and cribs without bumpers, pillows, loveys or soft toys. A simple baby mobile is plenty at this age. The time for snuggling up amongst all their teddy bears will come soon enough. Babies should sleep in a dark, well-ventilated room either within earshot of their carer or with a baby monitor. It is recommended that babies spend the first six months to a year sleeping in the same room, but not the same bed, as their parents.

For more in-depth information about your baby’s journey to a good night’s sleep, read this letter, Helping Your Baby to Sleep Better, from Shubhra Venneti, a certified sleep consultant and mum.

Choosing skin-kind bedding

Babies have the most delicate skin. It is soft, smooth, and precious but also very porous, meaning chemicals can pass easily into a baby's system through their skin. It is also very sensitive, and babies can be bothered by rough or scratchy fabrics. All our baby bedding is made of the smoothest materials, so there’s nothing to irritate your little darling’s skin in bed, aside from a wet diaper, that is!

Here you’ll find nursery bedding made with hypoallergenic fibres, organic cotton, and skin-safe fabrics. We love the fitted sheets and wraps from Snuggle Hunny Kids that are made from the softest cotton jersey that feels as beautiful as they look!

Oh, and we have to let you in on an incredible baby bed sheet life hack. Layer your baby’s mattress with three sets of sheets. Mattress on the inside, then mattress protector, sheet, mattress protector, sheet, and so on. In the middle of the night, if your little one wets the bed, just peel off the first two layers, redress bubs, and it’s back to sleep. No searching around in the dark for the second set of sheets; they’re right there waiting for you.
