How does physiotherapy help in pregnancy?
How does physiotherapy help in pregnancy?
A letter to you from Preet Singh, women’s health physio at Embrace Physiotherapy.
Dear Mum,
What an amazing journey on which you have embarked. It is a journey, nonetheless. And not a sprint. Although, at times, it may feel like a marathon…but know that there is a finish line, with some warm cuddles waiting for you (and possibly a nappy that needs to be changed too!).
Sometimes things don’t go as planned and sometimes things happen that you had no idea could. Don’t let anyone tell you it is normal when, in fact, it is common (and just to be clear, that’s not the same as normal); and something can be done to help you move forward.
A journey is one that is best shared. We weren’t meant to go through birth and raising a child alone. You have nothing to prove and there is no need to bounce back. Embrace moving forward knowing you can be supported with the right care and guidance.
Here is my women’s health physiotherapist’s tick list for embracing motherhood:
- A healthy dose of sunshine and fresh air each day.
- Walking most days of the week for up to 30 minutes a day and strength training two times a week.
- Learn to do pelvic floor exercises the right way- and perform them daily.
- Avoid constipation.
- Breathe!
- Befriend fellow pregnant mummas to create your tribe.
- Do something that makes you happy.
- And don’t forget to book a prenatal physiotherapy appointment.
Seeing a women’s health physiotherapist during pregnancy is a great time to obtain individualised advice and management for your aches and pains, bladder or bowel concerns, and to learn more about your pelvic floor and its important role during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond.
Love Preet
