Cribs, cots, bassinets… Baby sleep solutions explained.
Little babies sleep. They sleep a lot, but not always easily, and not always when and where you’d like them to! So it’s no wonder there are many different options for baby bedding. Let us break down some of the terminology and hopefully clear up some of the confusion!
Baby Cots & Baby Cribs
These are the same thing. Brits use cot and Americans use crib to refer to a small bed with high sides that prevents babies and toddlers from falling or climbing out. If a cot/crib has rocking chair style legs or a hanging basket configuration it is called a cradle, however these are not very commonly used.
Bassinets, Carrycots & Moses Baskets
These are all small-format beds typically used for the first four months of your babies sleep. They are all very portable. Carrycots typically attach to stroller bases and some even to car seat bases, bassinets often come affixed to a stand, while Moses baskets are typically made of wicker or rattan making them the most visually pleasing option - and perfect for the boho aesthetic!
Convertible Crib
The name says it all here really - these typically convert from a standard crib (or cot, see above) to a toddler bed, and then either to a daybed or child’s bed. The frame converts and grows, but you may need to switch out the baby mattress to a bigger one as your child, and the bed, grows.
Other sleep options
While those listed above are the most common options for night time sleep, babies sleep soundly and very practically in baby carriers and slings, baby bouncers, or strollers, and of course, in your arms
Safer sleeps for babies in cots
A word on safety. Your bedding should be firm and free of anything loose or movable. It might be cute to snuggle your newborn up with a teddy bear or two, but it is safest to zip them into a sleep suit, lay them on their back in a totally clear, well ventilated bed. Resist the temptation to add bumpers, loveys, curtains, blankets or toys. The crib may look stark, but it is the best way to ensure your baby has a safe night’s sleep. It is also recommended that your baby shares a room with you or their night time carer until they are at least six months old. Come chat with us and we can find a safe sleep solution that will fit your home and your lifestyle.
