When travelling in a car, a rear facing car seat is the safest option for babies, children and even adults! Research has shown it to be a whopping 500% safer to face the rear for children up to two, and the benefits certainly don’t disappear after that age. Babies and young children have large, heavy heads compared to their bodies, as well as relatively weak neck muscles. Facing the rear massively decreases the strain on their little necks should the unthinkable happen, and they end up in a crash. When facing the front, their bodies are held by the harness, while their heads are virtually unrestrained. Turn them around to face the back, and their back, neck and head are all supported by the car seat itself - much safer.
It is always recommended that infant car seats, a.k.a. capsules, are used in the rear facing position. But because of the huge safety benefits of rear facing car travel, the best car seat brands have developed ingenious designs to make it comfy for your little one to face backwards for as long as possible. Maxi-Cosi, Axkid and Britax all have fantastic seats that grow with your baby while still facing the rear, helping you keep them rear facing - that means safer, for longer.
Convertible car seats
When shopping for your newborn (especially before they arrive), it’s easy to be a little short-sighted. The thrill of a new addition to your family can make you forget that they’re only new and tiny for the shortest time. Convertible car seats take your child from birth to toddlerhood and beyond with inserts and padding that are gradually removed as your baby grows. A convertible rear facing baby car seat will stretch, expand and eventually rotate to a forward facing car seat and some even into a high backed booster seat. This means you’ll only need to buy one car seat, saving you money and hassle. Head to our car seat buying guide to learn more about the best convertible seats, or come in to see us to chat about it in person
Staying rear facing for longer
Buy the right car seat
While some brands claim ‘rear facing until x years old’, this may mean that although it is technically possible to have the seat installed backwards, for a larger child, there is virtually no room for them to sit, let alone get them in and out. We have thought long and hard about this, and we are confident that if you choose to keep your bigger kid rear facing, a car seat from PramFox will make this possible, and comfortable!
Use the right accessories
And for a rear facing child, this means a mirror! Of all our car seat accessories , this is the one that parents find the most valuable. Securing a crash-tested mirror to the rear headrest means you’ll be able to see your little one, and they’ll be able to see you too. While most rear facing baby car seats position your child plenty high enough to see out the windows, the mirror will give them a nearly 360-degree view of their journey. They’ll be riding in style.
Have ‘car only’ toys
Having a little collection of toys hidden away in the glove box of your car can be a great distraction for a toddler who’s on the verge of a meltdown. Fiddle toys, legos, cars or small dolls or books that only come out on car trips then have to ‘go back to sleep’ when you arrive can be a lifesaver!
