Choosing the most suitable mattress for your baby

Choosing a mattress for your baby to sleep on is a bit of a counterintuitive exercise. While it is tempting to softly snuggle your baby on a plush, cuddly surface, it’s actually exactly the opposite. Your baby’s mattress will be firm. Very firm. A good rule of thumb is if it feels at all comfortable for you to sleep on, then it’s too soft for your baby. When you press the mattress with your hand, it must spring back instantly, leaving no indent at all. All the mattresses sold by us here at PramFox meet the press test, so that’s something you don’t have to concern yourself with.

But why? Why are infant mattresses so hard? There are actually three reasons. The first reason is for sleep safety. If a baby rolls to their side or tummy, a soft mattress can obstruct their airway with potentially fatal results. Second, your baby will spend so many of their first hours lying on the mattress while their bones and muscles are rapidly growing and developing. A firm surface aids in the development of a strong, correctly formed body. And last of all, your baby is learning how to move, how to roll over, wriggle and squirm, how to sit up and crawl. A firm surface makes these movements more achievable. Imagine the difference between walking on the pavement or soft, sinking sand.

What to consider for baby mattresses living in Singapore

For us here in Singapore, temperature regulation of our little ones is of utmost importance to most new parents. We know little babies need to be kept warm, but how warm is too warm, and in perennially warm Singapore, is that above or below room temperature?

When it comes to keeping bubs not-too-hot and not-too-cool, clothing, bedding, and air temperature are big factors to consider, but equally important is the sleeping surface. That’s why, for Singapore babies, a mattress made of highly breathable materials is essential. Warmth and humidity can create stuffy sleeping environments, and so free and easy airflow needs to be ensured. Another thing to keep in mind, a baby in a baby nest will be a degree or two warmer than one on a baby mattress. Snuz makes high-tech mattresses that use the latest in material design for highly breathable sleeping surfaces.

Other features to look for are waterproof membranes (the potty training phase comes around all too quickly), anti-dust mite barriers and hypoallergenic materials. We stand behind all the mattresses we sell, confident that they will provide your most precious one with a safe night’s, or day’s sleep.
